Fugro
Oceanor provides
Wavescan buoys for
Ireland
The Irish National
Weather Buoy Network
comprises 6 offshore
buoys that gather
real-time weather
and oceanographic
data from around the
Irish coast.
The network is
funded by the
matitime safety
division of the
Department of
Transport and
represents a
collaboration
between the Marine
Institute, Met Éireann
and the United
Kingdom Met Office
(UKMO). In a
planned upgrade to
the National Weather
Buoy Network the
marine Institute has
procured two
Wavescan buoys from
Fugro Oceanor to be
deployed at 2
locations in the BMW
region. The buoys
are equipped with
standard metocean
sensors as well as a
CO2 sensor. Each
buoy has two
independent sets of
meteorological
sensors and
communication system
for redundancy
purpose. An
interface for the
Marine Institutes
own current
profiling instrument
and temp/salinity
sensor has also been
provided for. Fugro
Oceanor staff is
supporting and gives
on-the-job training
during the initial
deployment to
demonstrate
procedures and best
practice when
handling the buoys.
